You will doubtless need to rent a car for your stay on Kauai, and you should know that there is discount pricing available from local companies using vendors available at the airport. It pays to shop around!
Car rental on Kauai is pretty simple. When you fly to Kauai, you rent a car at the Lihue airport. You'll want to drive to where you are staying, to drive to the beaches, and you'll want to drive around the island. There is a coastal road that goes most of the way around the island, with the exception of the northwest Na Pali coast. That is a wild and fragile spot that is pretty inaccessible.
Waimea Canyon

need your car to get to a boat tour. And you'll need it to check out
Waimea Canyon, an hour's drive from the southwest coast, up into the
dry interior of the west side of the
island. So, how to choose a rental car? One that meets your needs might be similar to the one you have at home, only nicer of course. This might be an opportunity to check out a type of car that you have been thinking of buying, too. Don't forget to bring the CD's!
