Golf Kauai

golf kauaiKauai is a wonderful place for a serious golfer.  On this relatively small island, there are nine 18-hole golf courses to choose from.  Not only is there a range of challenge, there is plenty of gorgeous scenery to look at while golfing.  In the north, it's the mountains in the background, as you see at right, at the Princeville Golf Club.  On the east, it's the rainforest and the ocean.  On the south, it's near the beach.

My husband Steve loves to golf, so this is definitely on our agenda for our next trip, now that the kids are teenagers. What an experience that will be!

Let's go on a golf tour of Kauai, starting on the north side at Princeville and moving clockwise.

Princeville. There are three 18-hole golf courses at Princeville.  All three non-public courses were designed by Robert Trent Jones and have a par of 72. At the 1991 Prince Course at the Princeville Golf and Country Club, the greens fee for non-resort guests is $175 or so; Princeville Hotel guests get a reduced rate. At Princeville Resort, the 1972 Princeville Makai Golf Course has two 18-hole sections. One is called Woods/Lakes, and the other Ocean/Lakes. The standard greens fee for these is about $125, with a break for Princeville and Princeville Hotel guests.

Kapaa. Moving clockwise around the island, we come to Kapaa, on the eastern shore.  Here is the municipal Wailua Golf Course, 18 holes designed by Toyo Shirai and built in 1961, par 72. The greens fee is $44 or so.

Lihue. Continuing clockwise around the island, we find more 18-hole courses near Lihue on the southeast side. The Puakea Golf Course is a public course built in 2003  with a greens fee of about $125 and a par of 70; it was designed by Robin Nelson.

Another Lihue course is the Kiele Golf Course at the Kauai Lagoons Golf Club, a Marriott resort.  Jack Nicklaus designed this 18-hole golf course, rated a "gold medal" course by Golf Magazine.  The greens fee is about $185 unless you are staying at the Marriott. Kiele's sister course is the Mokihana course at the Kauai Lagoons Golf Club, also par 72 and designed by Jack Nicklaus.

Koloa/Poipu. Continuing our tour around the island, we come to Koloa, which is just north of Poipu on the south shore. There are two 18-hole golf courses in Koloa. The Kiahuna Golf Club there is a par-70 course also designed by Robert Trent Jones and built in 1984. And the Poipu Bay Beach Resort is a par-72 course built in 1991 with the same designer. This hosts the PGA Grand Slam of Golf.

Kalaheo. Our clockwise golf tour ends in Kalaheo, which is inland in the middle of the south shore area. Here is the nine-hole public Kukuiolono Golf Course, designed by Toyo Shirai. This is the oldest golf course on Kauai, built in 1928. The greens fee is about $8 for the nine holes.  It's a par-36 course.

And so, you see, Kauai is a treasure island for golfers!
